PAWTUCKET, R.I.—For the fifth time in eight weeks, UMass Boston women's basketball freshman Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Grassi averaged 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.7 steals and 1.3 blocks during the Beacons' second 3-0 week of the season. She also shot 54.5 percent from the field (18-33) and 5-10 from behind the 3-point arc. Grassi recorded at least 15 points in all three of the Beacons' road wins.
She opened the week by recording 19 points and nine rebounds in just 23 minutes of action, in a 77-50 win over Bridgewater State University.
On Wednesday, Grassi tacked on 15 points, six rebounds and a career-best five steals in a 77-54 thrashing of LEC foe Plymouth State University.
Grassi capped off the week by pouring in 15 points, five rebounds and a career-high five steals in a hard-fought 81-73 win over Western Connecticut State University.
The freshman forward leads the LEC with her 49.1 percent mark from behind the 3-point line. She also ranks in the top-10 in the league in scoring (17.1 PPG), rebounding (7.3 RBG), blocks (1.4 BPG) and field goal percentage (54.2 percent).
UMass Boston will face their toughest test of the conference season thus far, when they travel to preseason favorite UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
