Marcel Harley begins his first season working with the UMass Boston men’s and women’s tennis program for the 2019-20 season.
Harley, a native of Charlotte, N.C., started playing tennis at age 15. In his hometown, he played at the Tennis Advancement Program (T.A.P.) with top level coaches and juniors players.
Following three years of high school tennis and two conference championships, he earned both academic and athletic scholarships at Division II Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, N.C., where he played the number 1 position for three years. Harley srved as the team captain from 2008-2011 and won the Tennis Coach's Award.
After graduating with a degree in Human Performance & Wellness in 2011, he returned to coach T.A.P. beginners to nationally ranked juniors.
In 2013, Harley joined the Peace Corps where he served for 2 years in Burkina Faso as a Health Agent.
Currently he is a (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach training with a range of tennis professionals, collegiate, nationally ranked and junior players, specializing in athletic development, power, strength, balance, flexibility and agility. Harley is also a Certified PTR Performance and a Level 3 Junior or Development Coach. Harley has worked with the Sportmen’s Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, Mass. as a Tennis Professional and Strength and Conditioning Coach since August 2016. He coaches nationally ranked and college athletes, while also helping to plan, organize and manage group fitness classes for community members.
He currently lives in Jamaica Plain.
