Men's Tennis Sweeps Salve Regina 9-0 In Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass.—Seven different players earned victories, to lead UMass Boston men's tennis past Salve Regina University on Sunday afternoon in their 2019-20 home opener.

The Beacons dominated from start-to-finish in their first dual match of the season. 

Sal Albano (Haverhill, Mass.) and Rez Yuspi (Somerville, Mass.) opened the match with an 8-2 victory at third doubles over Salve's Clarke DePiazza and Michael Salazar. 

Nandish Shah (Ahmeabad, India) and Alexander Comerchero (Brookline, Mass.) pushed the lead to 2-0 with an 8-1 win over Trevor Jones and Will Chasse at number one doubles. 

The Beacons completed the doubles sweep at second doubles. Onkgopotse Mokoka (Pretoria, South Africa) and Kevin Kubinec (East Boston, Mass.) dispatched Aaron White and Samuel Johnson 8-3. 

In singles action, Jay Cyriaque (Boston, Mass.) made it 4-0 when he cruised past Benjamin Resende 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles. 

The Beacons clinched the match victory at second singles. Shah defeated Chasse 6-2, 6-1 at second singles to earn the fifth point of the day. 

Mokoka made it 6-0 moments later, as he knocked off Salazar 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. 

At number one singles, Comerchero defeated Jones 6-3, 6-2. 

The Beacons made it 8-0 at number three singles, when Yuspi outlasted White 6-2, 6-4. 

In the closest match of the day, Albano came back to defeat 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 10-3 in a third-set super tiebreaker. 


  • The Beacons improved to 3-1 all-time against the Seahawks. UMass Boston has defeated Salve Regina by a combined 17-1 score in their last two matches. 
  • Kubinec earned his first collegiate victory at second doubles. 
  • All three of the Beacons victories over the Seahawks have come in their fall opener. 
  • Yuspi collected his first career singles win at third singles.


UMass Boston will conclude the fall portion of their 2019-20 season, when members of the squad travel to Colby College for the 2019 ITA Regional Invitational Tournament this weekend.
