BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of penalty kick goals gave men's soccer all the scoring they needed as the Beacons blanked the University of Southern Maine by the final of 2-0 Saturday afternoon at James Cotter Field in a Little East Conference match-up.
UMass Boston 2, University of Southern Maine 0
UMass Boston (6-7-1, 3-0-1 Little East Conference)
Southern Maine (2-9-1, 1-3-0 Little East Conference)
HOW IT HAPPENED
With Saturday's victory, the Beacons remain just one of two unbeaten teams in the Little East behind Keene State College, who is 3-0 heading into their match with Plymouth State University.
Yuran Teixeira (Praia, Cape Verde) netted both penalty kick goals, with Jonathan Rodrigues drawing both fouls in the box. Teixeira's first PK came in the 28th minute, while his second clinched the victory in the 84th minute.
The two teams really did not threaten offensive throughout most of the contest. The Beacons, were content with moving the ball in their defensive and middle third for most of the contest, following the early PK score by Teixeira. Southern Maine had just five shots on goal, with only one proving to be a real threat for goalkeeper Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.).
The Beacons controlled a most of the momentum through the first 45 minutes of action, as they outshot the Huskies 7-5. In the second half, the two teams battled back-and-forth with the Beacons holding a slight 8-7 edge in total shots.
