BRISTOL, R.I. – A goal in the 77th minute by RPI proved to be the deciding tally as men's soccer fell in their season opener by the final of 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the Roger Williams University/Squad Locker Classic.
With the loss the Beacons will face Thomas College (Maine) tomorrow afternoon at 11 a.m. in the consolation game of the tournament.
Scoring the deciding tally for RPI was Esmir Hadzic which capped off a two goal second half. Netting the Beacons first goal of the 2014 campaign was junior transfer Elton Teixeira (Boston, Mass.) in the 25th minute off of an Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) assist.
On the day the Beacons totaled 14 shots, with five ending up on goal. Between the goal posts Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) made a total of two stops to start of his junior season.
RPI tied the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute on a goal by Nathaniel Gunderson, with the game-winner coming seven minutes later to push RPI into the championship game, where they will face the host Hawks of Roger Williams.
The Beacons will look to even their record tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Thomas College.
