Worcester State's Early Marker Holds Up In 1-0 Win over Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass.—Brendan Whitson's sixth minute goal held up for the final 84 minutes as Worcester State University (6-3-4) handed UMass Boston (9-5-1) their first second loss of the season 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center.

The senior forward from Auburn, Mass. made a terrific individual play to dribble through two defenders, before sending a hard shot off the hand of UMass Boston goaltender Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) and into the net.

Worcester State's early goal would stand up for the duration of the game, despite several terrific chances on both sides later in the contest.

Rosales made eight saves on nine shots for the Beacons, while sophomore Nick Zucco picked up the win by making five saves, including several highlight reel plays. With his five saves, Zucco picked up his team-leading fourth shutout of the year.

Worcester State outshot the Beacons 20-14 throughout the contest and 9-5 on shots on goal. UMass Boston held a huge 8-1 margin in corner kicks, while the two teams combined for 33 fouls and three cards in a game that became increasingly physical as the contest went on.

Whitson scored his sixth goal of the season on the first shot of the day for the Lancers. Zucco started the play by sending a booming free kick the length of the field where it was flicked on by a Lancer header and onto the foot of Whitson. The senior took the ball at the top of the box and weaved his way through two players before sending a liner off Rosales and into the net.

UMass Boston put together their best chance of the day at 71:23, when Zucco robbed Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) of what looked to be a sure goal. Rolando Barbosa (Fogo, Cape Verde) dribbled through traffic into the box and sent a cross right onto the head of Silveira inside of 10 feet from the goal-line, but Silveira's header was tipped just over the bar by a leaping Zucco.

The Beacons scored a goal in the 79th minute, only to have the goal called off due to offsides. After the Beacons initial corner kick was cleared out towards midfield, Luis Alva (Peru, Mass.) sent a hard shot from 40 yards out that Zucco struggled to handle. With the goaltender down and the ball loose, Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.) rushed forward to collect the ball and dribbled it by Zucco and into the net, only to have the referee blow the whistle.

UMass Boston managed just one more shot in regulation, as Dylan Hawkins' (North Easton, Mass.) look from the top of the box was deflected wide off of a Lancer.

Worcester State will return home Saturday when they host Salem State University at 1 p.m. in a MASCAC matchup. The Beacons will continue their season-long four-game homestand Saturday when they host Keene State College in a big conference showdown at 1 p.m.
