Fitchburg State’s Second Half Rally Downs Men’s Soccer in Opener

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Falcons of Fitchburg State (1-0) scored a pair of second half goals to comeback from a 2-0 deficit to defeat men's soccer by the final of 3-2 in the second game of the Lasell College Kick-Off Classic Saturday afternoon at Weymouth High School.

Kenneth Kelley converted twice from the penalty spot in the second half, and Carmen Bordonaro netted a first half goal to lead Fitchburg State to the non-conference victory.

For the Beacons junior Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) scored both Beacons goals in the first half, with Jerry Phanor (Boston, Mass.) notching his first collegiate assist in the tough loss.

Fitchburg State will face Lasell tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in the tournament's championship match, while the Beacons will take on Newbury College in the 12:00 p.m. consolation match.

The Beacons jumped out to an early lead when Silveira fired a ball past the Falcons keeper 45 seconds into the match following a giveaway just outside the top of the 18 to put UMB on top, 1-0. Silveira tacked on a second goal when he combined neatly with Phanor and slipped behind the Falcons back four, slotting home to give his side a 2-0 advantage in the 25th minute.

Fitchburg reclaimed some of the match momentum when a Smith long ball sprung the hard-working Bordonaro who chipped the closing UMB keeper neatly to pull Fitchburg back with a goal at 2-1 in the 40th minute. The Beacons held a 2-1 edge at the intermission, having controlled the play for much of the opening half only to watch Fitchburg settle in and find their footing during the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza.

The second half began much the same way the first ended, with UMB creating some chances, but the Falcons maintaining their composure and work-rate keep themselves in the game. After a chance by Fitchburg was denied by UMB, the Beacons were whistled for a foul in the box in the 71st minute earning a penalty which Kelly fired into the lower left corner, tying the match at 2-2.

Both teams were unable to break through until Bordonaro was taken down from behind in the box in the 85th minute earning the Falcons another penalty. Kelly again found the back of the net with his attempt from the spot to give Fitchburg State a 3-2 lead with five minutes remaining and the Falcons held on from there.

Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) made four saves in net to earn the victory for Fitchburg, while Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) stopped three shots for the Beacons while taking the loss.

The Beacons return to action tomorrow at noon when they face Newbury College.
