BOSTON, Mass.—Rhode Island College (2-4-1, 1-1 LEC) scored a goal with 21 minutes remaining and held on to defeat the Beacons 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Field.
Despite having the better of the chances on the day, UMass Boston (2-4-2, 0-2) dropped their second straight Little East Conference game to start the season.
Emmanuel Asiedu scored his team-high fourth goal for the Anchormen and his second goal in as many games against the Beacons.
Douglas Silvera (Revere, Mass.) and Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.) led the Beacons with three shots apiece. Kelvin Martinez (East Boston) and Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) were the only other UMass Boston players to record a shot on goal.
Sophomore goalie Bryce Menard (Randolph, Mass.) had another strong performance with two critical first-half saves.
Rhode Island College goalie Christopher Duarte was the star of the game, as he made five saves in his second shutout of the season.
After Johnson and the rest of the Beacons line turned the Anchormen away time after time in the first 70 minutes, Asiedu dribbled the ball in the near corner and sent an attempted cross across the goal mouth that ended up in the net, after taking a bounce off a Beacons defender.
UMass Boston would have several chances late in the game, but every shot was either stopped by Duarte or went just wide of the net.
The Beacons will have the week off, before returning to the pitch next Saturday when they travel to take on Southern Maine at noon.
