Men’s Basketball Races Past Castleton For Conference Win

CASTLETON, Vt. – Led by Alex Sanchez (Salem, Mass.) and Dasan Cinelli (Boston, Mass.) men's basketball got back in the win column as they recorded a 71-62 Little East Conference win over Castleton University Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gym.

UMass Boston 71, Castleton University 62

UMass Boston (10-9, 5-6 Little East Conference)
Castleton University (3-17, 0-11 Little East Conference)

The duo led the Beacons offensive showing as they each recorded 19 points in the crucial conference win.  Cinelli nearly finished with a double-double as he grabbed nine rebounds to go along with his 7-for-13 shooting performance.  Sanchez finished 7-for-16 from the floor, with five of those baskets coming from behind the arc.

Michael Boyd (Malden, Mass.) recorded his eighth double-digit performance in the last nine games as he recorded 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting.  Charles Mitchell (Boston, Mass.) closed out the Beacons top scorers as the sophomore came-off the bench to finish with 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting

For the host Spartans, Casey Belade recorded a game-high 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting, which included a 3-for-6 performance from behind the arc.

Michael Morgan finished with 14 points to lead the Spartans bench.

In the first half, UMass Boston led from start to finish as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to a game opening 3-pointer by Sanchez. The Beacons would push their lead to 10 points after Sanchez drained his fourth trey in just the first five minutes of the contest.

UMB would ride that early offensive surge throughout the first half, but a Castleton run in the final minutes cut the Beacons lead to one (35-34) before halftime.

Castleton's only lead of the contest came in the 16th minute when Belade recorded five straight points to make it 42-40.  However, that lead did not last as the Beacons clawed their way back.  They would quickly regain a double-digit lead over the final five minutes to cruise to the conference win.
