THOMPSON NAMED LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE VOLLEYBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR FIFTH TIME

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball player Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) has been named the Little East Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of October 24-30, it was announced today by the conference. This honor marks the fifth time this season that she has earned the award as she was named the league's top offensive play for the weeks of August 30 to September 6, September 12-18, September 19-25 and October 3-9.
In five matches, Thompson registered a total of 71 kills and 58 digs to help UMass Boston clinch the top seed in the Little East Conference Championship for the second consecutive season. The Moorpark, Calif. native turned in a standout performance against both Plymouth State and Keene State, registering double-doubles in each of UMass Boston's 3-0 wins. Against the Panthers, Thompson turned in a match-high 13 kill effort to go along with 12 digs, two solo blocks and an ace. On Thursday against the Owls, the middle hitter notched 10 kills, 10 digs, two solo blocks and an ace in the win. Over the weekend at the Judges Classic, Thompson averaged 3.17 kills and 3.0 digs per set over three matches.
In the LEC, Thompson currently ranks second in kills averaging 4.00 per set and sixth in hitting percentage with a .290 clip on the year. She also ranks sixth in the conference averaging 3.06 digs per set.
A Moorpark High School product, Thompson has already established herself as an outstanding player in UMB volleyball annals, earning LEC Rookie of the Year honors a year ago as well as First Team All-Conference accolades to go with All-Region selections from the AVCA and the New England Women's Volleyball Association. She currently ranks fourth in school history with 812 career kills, while placing second with a lifetime hitting mark of .314, second with 86 block assists, fifth with 70 solo blocks and sixth with 126 career aces.
The Beacons, who received 30 votes in the most recent Division III American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll, completed the regular season with a 25-4 overall record. For the second consecutive year they finished conference play with an unblemished, 7-0 mark and will host the 2010 Little East Conference tournament quarterfinals and final. UMass Boston will play in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. vs. the winner of the \#5 UMass Dartmouth vs. \#4 Western Connecticut State match taking place on Tuesday, November 2 at Western Connecticut State University.
