BOSTON, Mass. – The weekly awards continue to roll-in for junior middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) as she was named Sports Imports/AVCA National Division III and ECAC New England Region Player of the Week respectively.
The national weekly honor is the first in the career of the two-time All-American and the first-ever in the history of UMass Boston volleyball. The ECAC honor is the second of the year for Thompson, who remains one of the top hitters in Division III volleyball today.
The 6’2” middle played a major part in helping the Beacons extend their record setting win-streak to 21 consecutive matches. In the 4-0 week, Thompson totaled 58 kills to lead the Beacons offense. Her 20 kills in the Little East Conference win over UMass Dartmouth made her the all-time career kills leader at UMass Boston. Over the weekend, she earned MIT Invitational Tournament MVP honors after leading UMass to three straight wins, including back-to-back victories over regionally ranked MIT and Williams College (MA).
On the week, Thompson scored her team-best 58 kills on 104 attempts (.433 attack percentage). She also recorded 25 digs and 19 blocks to help the Beacons remain as one of the top-20 teams in the nation.
