NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – After a strong week in which volleyball went 4-0, freshman Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) and junior Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) were named Little East Conference Rookie and Offensive Player of the Week respectively by the conference office.
The Rookie of the Week honor is the second of the year for Morrison, who closed out last week, with all-tournament nod at the MIT Invitational. In three of the four matches played last week, Morrison tallied 27 kills in the three match tournament. On 47 attempts, Morrison surrendered just six errors. Against the Engineers, Morrison was 13-for-17 (.765) with no errors to help the Beacons earn a 3-2 win over their regionally ranked opponent. At the net, Morrison totaled three solo blocks and 10 block assists.
For Thompson, this is her third weekly honor of her junior campaign. The MVP of the MIT Invitational, Thompson combined for 58 kills on 104 attempts in the Beacons 4-0 week. In Tuesday’s win over UMass Dartmouth, Thompson led the offense with 20 kills, which also made her the all-time career kills leader at UMass Boston. In the back-to-back wins over regionally ranked MIT and Williams College (MA), Thompson drove home 28 kills. Defensively, Thompson totaled 19 blocks and 25 digs respectively.
