CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 17th ranked Beacons continued to add to their already record setting win-streak, notching their 19th straight victory as they defeated Western New England University (10-10) by the final score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) Friday evening at MIT’s DuPont Athletic Center as part of the 2011 MIT Invitational.
For the Beacons, Friday’s contest was a tough one as they struggled to find any real rhythm. In the first set, there were a combined five lead changes and the teams were tied on the scoreboard a total of 11 times. After pulling out the win, UMass began to settle down for the most part as they never let Western New England lead for the remainder of the contest. The Gold Bears were only able to tie the Beacons a total of four times in the final two sets.
As a team, the Beacons finished the match 42-for-81 and had a .322 attack percentage. Western New England was 26-for-87 and had a .115 attack percentage. Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) led the Beacons with 10 kills, while Maureen Pollet led her squad with the same amount.
One of the major deciding factors in the match was UMass’s ability to score on their service attempts as they finished the match with seven aces. Western New England struggled from the back line as they were charged with nine errors.
Defensively, UMass came up big throughout Friday’s 3-0 victory, as the totaled a combined eight blocks. Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) tallied two block assists and two solo blocks to lead the defensive effort. Thompson finished the match with one solo stop, and three block assists. She also totaled a match-high nine digs. Kayla Wilson (San Jose, CA) and Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) each recorded eight digs as well.
Setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) was 35-for-67 on assists attempts, while her Western New England counterpart, Heather Mears was 22-for-79.
Volleyball returns to action tomorrow when they face Williams College (MA) at 11 a.m. and MIT at 2 p.m.
