NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball player Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) has been named Little East Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Week for her play during the week of October 5-11, it was announced today. The honor marks the fourth straight time and fifth in six weeks that she has received the award. She was also named the league's top rookie for the weeks of August 31 to September 6, September 14-20, September 21-27 and September 28 to October 4.

In five matches and 15 sets, Thompson averaged 2.60 kills, 0.73 aces, 1.60 digs. 0.40 blocks and 3.67 points per set, while hitting .342. The freshman began the week with six kills, six digs and two total blocks in three sets at Endicott College on October 6 and came back two days later to spike for 14 kills in just 17 attempts for an astounding .824 hitting percentage at University of Southern Maine on October 8. She also added an ace and four digs in three sets. The middle hitter put down eight kills, fired four aces, got down for seven digs and posted a block solo on October 10 in three sets vs. Wheaton College and was perfect with five kills in as many attempts to go with an ace in three sets vs. Massachusetts Maritime Academy the same afternoon. Thompson capped the week by firing a career-high five aces to go with six kills, seven digs and three total blocks, including a pair of solos in three sets on October 10 vs. Babson College.

For the season, the Moorpark High School graduate has been one of the LEC's top players, ranking fourth among league leaders with 3.44 kills and 0.59 aces per set and in hitting percentage with a .373 mark. She also stands third with 4.42 points per set. The 6'2" hitter is just one of two players for the Beacons to have played in all 73 sets over 21 matches and also stands second for UMass Boston with 0.60 total blocks and third with 2.25 digs per set. Consistency has been a hallmark of her game in her first year of collegiate volleyball with at least one ace in 19 of 21 matches, including a streak of 15 straight from September 4-29. She has also racked up 10 or more kills in all but five matches for the season, including a season-high of 19 at Pomona-Pitzer College to open the season on September 4 at the Pacific Coast Classic, where she was named to the All-Tournament Team. She's been an extremely efficient hitter, match in and match out, with a positive hitting percentage in every outing and has posted a mark of at least .214 in every match but one thus far, including a three matches of .750 or above. Thompson has shown off her defensive prowess as well with at least one block in all but six matches and has scooped up at least five digs on 16 occasions.

The Beacons have won four straight matches and 17 of their last 19 for a 17-4 overall record, including 3-0 in Little East Conference play. UMass Boston ranked number one in the NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball Association Poll for the first three weeks of the season and places second in the latest survey. The squad has also received votes in the past four American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III National Weekly Polls with nine, seven, 10 and six votes, respectively. The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, October 13 when they host Framingham State College at the Clark Athletic Center for a 6:00 p.m. match.
