McWHORTER LEADS VOLLEYBALL IN LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS OVER RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE, 3-0

BOSTON, MA - Senior outside hitter Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, CA) posted a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team over Rhode Island College, 25-10, 25-16, 25-16, in the Little East Conference tournament semifinals today at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston.

The Beacons, who are ranked second in the latest NCAA Division III New England Women's Volleyball poll, win their school-record 15th straight contest and have won 26 of their last 28 matches to improve to 28-4 overall. UMass Boston is off to its best start in school history. The Anchorwomen finish their season with an 18-19 record. The Beacons will play for the LEC championship tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center vs. the winner of number two seed Plymouth State University and number three seed Western Connecticut State University.

UMass Boston jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the opening set and increased its advantage to 16-5, before taking the set. The Beacons scored seven of the first nine points of the second frame, but Rhode Island College later cut the deficit to 22-16, before UMass Boston ripped off the final three points to take a 2-0 match lead. The Beacons raced out to a 6-1 margin in the third set and later led, 11-3, before the Anchorwomen went on a 6-4 run to cut the deficit to 15-9 and stayed within 16-12. UMass Boston scored nine of the final 13 points to hold off the visitors and take the set and the match.

McWhorter was on target all afternoon, committing just one error to register a .600 hitting percentage and added an ace and three block assists to her 14th double-double of the year. Senior outside hitter Kate White (Plymouth, MA) was outstanding with an 11-kill effort on a torrid .692 hitting mark to go with a block assist, while sophomore setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) directed the offense with 35 assists in addition to three kills in five attempts, four digs and a block assist. Freshman middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) contributed with nine kills, nine digs, a block solo and a service ace, while classmate Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) helped anchor the defense with 13 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Breanna Boyer (West Greenwich, RI) led Rhode Island College with eight kills on a .350 hitting clip and added four digs and a block solo, while senior outside hitter Sharon Corriveau (Coventry, RI) and junior outside hitter Tess Heidel (Warwick, RI) each chipped in with four kills. Heidel also fired an ace, scooped up three digs and got up for a block assist. Freshman setter Jessica Ho (Providence, RI) controlled the offense with 14 assists and got down for three digs.
