PROVIDENCE, RI - Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) delivered another double-double performance to lead the University of Massachusetts volleyball team defeated Johnson & Wales University, 3-1, at the Harborside RAC on Thursday evening. Johnson & Wales took control of the match early with a 25-20 win in the first set before the visiting Beacons knotted the game at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory in set two. UMass Boston won a back-and-forth third set by a score of 25-20 before closing out the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set of the evening
Thompson ended the match with a career-high 25 kills and 10 digs while freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) added 11 kills and 13 digs in the win for the Beacons. Freshman outside hitter Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, CA) hit a stifling .500 percent from the floor, smashing down eight kills on 16 attempts while sophomore setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) dished out a career and match-high 30 assists.
Senior Catherine Bravo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) notched a triple double for Johnson & Wales, tallying 13 kills, 12 assists and 11 digs while senior Nikki Balchunas (Brockton, MA) had eight kills and eight digs for the Wildcats. Freshman Ashley Rey (Miami, FL) added 16 assists and two digs in the loss for the Wildcats.
With the loss, JWU falls to 5-6 while UMass Boston improves to 11-1 for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, September 25th when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match with Lasell, starting at 1:00 p.m while the Beacons host Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College that same day in a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
