WALTHAM, MA - Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) registered 18 kills and seven digs while freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, CA) recorded 16 kills and a team-high 12 digs to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston over Brandeis University, 3-1, this afternoon at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA. The Beacons dropped their first match of the day to Trinity College (CT), 3-1, finishing the tournament in a tie for first place with both Trinity and Brandeis. All three squads boasted a 3-1 record over the weekend but the Judges took home the Invitational title, coming out ahead in the sets won tiebreaker. With the split, the Beacons stand at 8-1 on the season while the Bantams are now 3-1 overall. The loss drops Brandeis to 7-2.

UMass Boston was in total control over the Judges early, taking the first set, 25-18 and the second set, 25-15. Brandeis fought back to win the third set, 25-22, but the Beacons finished the match strong collecting a 25-18 win in the fourth set to pick up the 3-1 win.

Thompson and Porter were both very efficient from the floor with impressive hitting percentages in the win. Porter led the way hitting .455 on 16 kills over 22 swings while Thompson's .353 clip helped land her a spot on the All-Tournament team. This was Thompson second All-Tournament selection of the 2010 campaign, the sophomore was named to the River City Classic team as the tournament's MVP last week in San Antonio, TX.

Junior setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) dished out a season-high 32 assists to go along with six digs and an ace while sophomore libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) played well defensively with 11 digs, an ace and an assist.

The Beacons are idle until Thursday, September 16, 2010 when they host Endicott College in a non-conference matchup at 6:00 PM. Brandeis also plays Endicott next, hosting the Seagulls on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 in a 7:00 PM matchup.
