SAN ANTONIO, TX - The University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team defeated McMurry University, 3-0 this afternoon to capture the 2010 Trinity University River City Classic in San Antonio, TX. The Beacons went a perfect 4-0 over the weekend defeating Hardin-Simmons University and Whitworth University on Friday while topping the No. 12 ranked Trinity University Tigers this morning before cruising against McMurry to round out the tournament field. McMurry falls to 0-3 on the season while the 4-0 start for UMass Boston is the program's best start ever.
Against McMurry, sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, CA) led the way with 14 kills and nine digs en route to being named to the River City Classic All-Tournament team. Over the weekend Thompson compiled 64 kills, 50 digs, eight solo blocks, six aces, four block assists and four assists. Junior setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver, CO) was also named to the All-Tournament team with an impressive four-game showing of 79 assists, 29 digs, 10 aces, four kills and a 1.000 hitting percentage.
Sophomore libero Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) recorded double-digit dig totals in all four contests to collect a combined 80 digs in the tournament, averaging 5.71 digs per set.
The Beacons received solid offensive efforts from both freshman outside hitter Corrine Porter (Landera Ranch, CA) and junior middle hitter Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) during the four-game tournament. Porter smashed 30 kills while Rattigan chipped in with 24 kills. Freshman outside hitter Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, CA) also played well during her first collegiate tournament, collecting 19 kills and three aces en route to UMass Boston's four victories.
Sophomore setter Frana Burtness-Adams (Fairbanks, AK) was very consistent running the Beacons offense recording 62 assists over 14 sets to average 4.43 per set to go along with 23 digs.
For the first time in program history, the Beacons return from their season-opening trip with an unblemished record standing at 4-0. Prior to this weekend, the best start had been a 2-0 showing in 1999, 1996 and 1982.
UMass Boston will be back in action on Wednesday, September 13, 2010 when it hosts Emerson College for a 6:00 PM EST tilt.
