Volleyball Set To Face Stiff Competition In 2017

BOSTON, Mass. – After winning their seventh Little East Conference crown last season, Beacons volleyball is once again ready to climb the mountain as they announced their 2017 schedule.

Last season, the Beacons collected 29 victories and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  After serving as the co-head coach for the last four seasons, Mike Houlihan will take the reins on the program this season, as the lone leader for UMB.

The Beacons will begin their new season on September 1-2 when they take part in the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational in Belton, Texas.  UMB will open the tournament against Susquehanna University and the University of Texas at Tyler.  They will then close out the two-day invitational against Hardin-Simmons University and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

In their first match in the Clark Gymnasium, UMB will face the University of Minnesota Morris and Marymount University (VA).  After playing four straight road matches, which includes their conference opener against Rhode Island College on September 19, the Beacons will return to the harbor campus on the 21st for their final home match in September.  The Beacons will host WPI at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for five straight matches.  Perhaps their biggest match of September will come on the 26th when they travel to Medford to take on Tufts University, who is the Beacons only nationally-ranked opponent from the 2016 season.

UMass Boston begins the month of October with three straight homes matches, which include a pair of conference tilts against UMass Dartmouth and Plymouth State University.  They will also face another top New England team in Wellesley College in a rare home Friday match.

The Beacons final home match will take place on the 18th when they take on Little East Conference rival Keene State College at 6 p.m. in the Clark.  From there the Beacons will hit the road four more times before the conference tournament.  The Beacons will close out the regular season at the Skidmore College Invitational on October 27-28.
