Eight Tennis Players Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards

BOSTON, Mass.—Eight student-athletes from UMass Boston men's and women's tennis earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete Awards, the ITA announced last week. 

The women's team had five honorees and the team earned the ITA All-Academic Team Award for the fifth-consecutive season. On the other side, the men's team placed a program-record three players on the ITA Division III Scholar-Athlete Team.

The Beacons eight student-athletes had to post a minimum 3.50 grade-point average for the academic year and have finished at least two college semesters. Women's Tennis earned the team award after posting a team GPA over 3.20 for the academic year. 

Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) led all eight Beacons with her fourth-consecutive academic honors. Fellow senior Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) earned her third honors in three seasons of playing with the Beacons. 

Senior Maria Benatuil (Caracas, Venezuela) took home her second-straight honors, while senior Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) each were first-time winners. 

On the men's side, junior Tin Tran (Quincy, Mass.) became a two-time winner. Sophomores Adam Acker (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Sal Albano (Haverhill, Mass.) each earned their first career Academic honors.
