Seven Women's Tennis Players Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Status

BOSTON, Mass.—Seven UMass Boston women's tennis players have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (4.0) scale or better for the 2013-14 academic year.

Senior co-captains Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) led the way for the Beacons who finished second amongst all Little East schools with their seven honorees. Counts earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the third consecutive season, while Kloczewiak wrapped up her career with her first ITA academic honors.

First-year players Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.), Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.), Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.), Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) and Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) all joined Counts and Kloczewiak as ITA Scholar-Athletes.

The 2013-14 Beacons women's tennis team returned to the Little East Conference Tournament behind a key three-match-conference winning streak to close out the regular season. UMass Boston's six wins matched the second-most wins in a single season for the program since 2002.

Head coach Eric Berg's squad will kick off their 2014-15 campaign with a home match against Mount Holyoke College on August 30 at 11 a.m.
