BOSTON, Mass. – UMass Boston women's tennis (3-7) swept three doubles flights and captured three of the six singles flights as the Beacons snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology (5-7) in non-conference action played at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center.
Senior Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) teamed with classmate Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) to take an 8-3 win at number one doubles over sophomore Caitlin Corcoran and junior Virginia Ofer to begin the match.
Freshman Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Logan Smith (Southwick, Mass.) won 8-6 at number three doubles over senior Olivia Hegner and junior Val Maccarone, before sophomore Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France) and freshman Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.) completed the Beacons doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at number two over senior Deborah Massaro and sophomore Nicole McColgan.
The Beacons extended their lead to 4-0 when Muntasser defeated Corcoran, 6-3, 6-0 at number one singles.
Wentworth cut the lead to 4-1 at number six singles when Hegner defeated freshman Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.), 6-1, 6-2. UMass Boston clinched the match when Kloczewiak defeated Massaro, 6-3, 6-3 at number two.
McColgan picked up a three-set (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) win over Counts at third-flight singles and junior Marissa Page (Warwick, R.I.) won at number five singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey).
Castelli closed out the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) win over Ofer at fifth-flight singles.
UMass Boston will return to action Saturday when they travel to Bridgewater State University at Noon.
