PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The third seeded Panthers of Plymouth State University (10-4) recorded two wins in doubles play and three wins in singles play to defeat sixth seeded women's tennis (6-9) Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Little East Conference tournament at Plymouth State's P.E. Center Courts.
With the win, the Panthers will now face second seeded Salem State University on Thursday in the semi-final round of this year's conference tournament. The tournament appearance for the Beacons was their first since 2008.
Tuesday's match got off to a good start for the Beacons as the first doubles pair of MaKenna Arrigo (Yarmouth Port, MA) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA) recorded an 8-6 win to tie the match at 1-1. Picking up the first win of the day for the Panthers was Elizabeth Silsby and Jane Duggan at third doubles. Plymouth State would take a 2-1 lead following their 8-6 win at second doubles.
In singles play, the Panthers rolled to three straight wins to secure the 5-1 victory. Kloczewiak fell in her first singles match by the score of 6-2, 6-2. Arrigo was defeated in second singles by the final of 6-2, 6-0. Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, MA) played an extremely hard match at third singles, but was eventually defeated by Molly Heartfield, 6-3, 6-2.
Even with the fall season over, women's tennis will return in 2011 for their spring matches. That schedule will be released early next year.
