DANBURY, CT (Oct. 9) - Junior Jillian Duran (Uncasville, CT) scored a pair of goals and senior Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, CT) scored once for the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team as the Colonials defeated Little East Conference rival UMass Boston 3-0 Saturday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Jillian Duran got WestConn on the board mid-way through the first half when she took a pass from older sister Jennifer Duran and beat the UMass Boston defense through the left side of the box for a 1-0 WestConn lead. The play began with Jennifer Duran attacking the right side of the Beacon defense and sending a long crossing pass out of the reach of a UMass Boston defender. Jillian Duran broke for the ball just after the pass was made, staying just on-side, and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one from the left side of the box, ten yards in front of the goal. The Colonials would outshoot UMass Boston by a 10-1 margin in the first half, but the score remained 1-0 at intermission.
Ten minutes into the second half, Jennifer Duran gave WestConn a little breathing room when she scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from graduate student Nicole Sieber (Newtown, CT). Jillian Duran scored her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season at the 66:41 mark, beating the UMass Boston goalkeeper cross-cage after taking a pass from sophomore Brittany Papaj (Sandy Hook, CT) to give the Colonials their final margin of victory, 3-0.
For the game, WestConn held a 24-2 advantage in shots, an 11-1 edge in shots on goal, and earned three corner kicks compared to none for UMass Boston. Katie Coscia (Pittsfield, MA) made eight saves in goal for UMass Boston, but suffered the loss, while sophomore Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, CT) was only called upon to make one save to earn the win, before being replaced by sophomore Amanda Simon (Brick, NJ) for the game's final ten minutes.
UMass Boston freshman goalkeeper Katie Coscia (Pittsfield, MA) made eight saves for the Beacons while Caitlin Avery made 1 save on the night for Western Connecticut.
WestConn's season record now stands at 8-4, 3-1 in the Little East Conference. UMass Boston's record is now 7-3-3, 2-2 in the LEC. The Colonials return to action Wednesday, October 13th, when they host Scranton at 7:00 p.m. while UMass Boston travels across town to face Emerson College in a 5:30 contest.
