Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Three different players netted a pair of goals for the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team in a 10-0 victory over visiting Newbury College today at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons extend their school-record unbeaten streak to eight straight matches and improve to 8-2-1 on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 2-3-0.

UMass Boston broke a school record for goals in a half with seven in the first stanza and broke the school standard for goals in a match, eclipsing the total of nine set earlier this season on September 15 vs. Wheelock College.

Junior forward Tina Gillen (Carver, MA), sophomore forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) and senior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) each netted two goals for the Beacons to mark the first time in school history that they have had three players net two or more goals in the same match.

Gillen put UMass Boston on the board with her second game-winning tally of the campaign with a header off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Molly Kuchar (Ashville, NC) just 5:34 into the match. Gillen's second score of the match and fifth of the season came unassisted when she lofted a shot over the Newbury keeper to the far post at the 20:40 mark of the first half to give the Beacons a 5-0 advantage. Morales netted the afternoon's second goal with a chip over the keeper at 9:46 of the first half and gave UMass Boston an 8-0 lead with a low hard shot that beat the Nighthawks' keeper at the near post at 73:08 of the second half for her fourth goal of the year. Mulry rang up her first goal at 13:37 with a blast from 18 yards out for a 4-0 UMass Boston lead and capped the day's scoring with her team-leading 11th of the season coming on a header off a cross from sophomore forward Julienne McCuish (Mashpee, MA) at the 76:10 mark of the second half for McCuish's second assist of the match.

The Beacons took a 3-0 lead at 12:30 of the first half when Kuchar sent a corner kick into the box that found Gillen's head and then the foot of sophomore midfielder Brianna Cavanaugh (Belchertown, MA) for her first tally of the season. Freshman midfielder Brittney Spencer (West Brookfield, MA) later increased the UMass Boston lead to 6-0 when McCuish set her up for her first collegiate goal at 32:58 of the opening half. McCuish followed less than four minutes later with her first goal of the year at 36:42 to give the Beacons a 7-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Sophomore midfielder Allyson Lemieux (Hudson, NH) later took a cross from Spencer, trapped it and scored her third goal of the season on a shot over the Newbury keeper from the top of the box to give UMass Boston a 9-0 lead.

Junior keeper Michelle Cain (Essex, MA) was untested in the first half for the Beacons to extend her consecutive minutes without a goal allowed streak to 312:18, while senior Jessica Penta (Revere, MA) stopped the only two shots she faced in the second half to share the shutout for the Beacons. Freshman goalie Jennifer Anderson (Palmer, MA) made 14 saves for the Nighthawks, who were outshot 39-3 on the afternoon.

UMass Boston will be in action again on October 10 when it hosts Western Connecticut State University at the Clark Athletic Center Field for a 1:00 p.m. Little East Conference match, while Newbury travels to Boston again for a 3:30 match on October 10 with Wheelock College.
