NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - Sophomore defender Lauren Vargas' (Rochester, MA) goal with 30 seconds left in regulation time tied the match, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team and visiting University of Massachusetts Boston played a 2-2, double overtime tie in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday. The Beacons are now 3-5-1 on the season, including an unbeaten mark of 2-0-1 in LEC play, while the Corsairs fall to 1-3-4 and 0-1-2.
Vargas sent a shot into the upper right part of the net to tie the match in the 90th minute with her first goal of the season.
The Corsairs had taken an early lead. Sophomore midfielder Cristal Peixoto (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) made it 1-0 when she sent a shot just inside the post 45 seconds into the match. Sophomore forward Allison Carver made it 2-0 when her shot deflected in off a Beacon defender at the five minute mark.
UMass Boston cut the Corsair advantage to one when freshman forward Kristen Mulry (Holbrook, MA) sent a shot into the upper part of the net in the 69th minute.
The Corsairs out shot the Beacons, 16-9. Sophomore goalkeeper Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) made six saves, while UMass Boston sophomore keeper Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, NH) made seven stops.
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Bridgewater State Tuesday. UMass Boston will visit Newbury Tuesday.
