BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Erika Marsters (Mashpee, MA) netted the game-winning goal and sophomore keeper Ashley McRoberts (Merrimack, NH) earned her first shutout of the season to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston over visiting University of Southern Maine, 2-0, this afternoon in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 3-5-0 overall and 2-0-0 in LEC play and set a school-record for conference wins in a season with their first-ever league victory at home, while the Huskies fall to 3-5-0 and 0-2-0.
UMass Boston got on the board when junior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) sent a cross that went through the Southern Maine keeper's hands and onto the foot of Marsters, who found the back of the middle of the net with a low shot at the 12:46 mark of the first half for a 1-0 edge. The Beacons wasted no time adding an insurance goal, just 54 seconds later, when freshman defender Samantha Place (Newton, NJ) fired a wind-aided shot from 25-yards out that was pushed over the keeper's head at 13:40 of the first half for a 2-0 UMB margin.
UMass Boston dominated the shots, owning a 30-7 advantage as McRoberts registered five saves on the day to post her second career shutout, while senior goalie Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) made 16 saves, including 12 in the first half, for the Huskies.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, October 4 when they travel to North Dartmouth, MA for a Little East Conference match with University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m., while Southern Maine hosts Plymouth State University at 1:00 p.m. on October 4.
