WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTCHES 1-1 DRAW VS. WPI
Sept. 23, 2010
WORCESTER, MA - The WPI and UMass Boston women's soccer teams battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw Thursday on a beautiful autumn evening at WPI's Alumni Field. With the result, the host Engineers are now 1-6-1 on the season while the Beacons move their record to 4-1-3.
UMass Boston dented the scoring column first early in the 13th minute when Kelli Neville (Milton, MA) received a long pass from Samantha Cristoforo (Rockland, MA) and belted a low drive into the bottom left corner from just inside the 18-yard box. It was the freshman's second marker of the season.
It took the nearly 68 minutes for WPI to get the equalizer. With just 9:17 left in regulation, senior Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) slipped down the left side and sent a cross into the box that deflected off a UMass Boston defender and into the net for an own goal.
Both teams had outstanding chances in the overtimes. The Beacons' best opportunity came in the opening minute of the extra session when Kristin Mulry's (Holbrook, MA) blast following a short pass off a free kick was repelled by WPI goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY). The Engineers best crack came midway through the second overtime when Garza fed Suzanne Najem (Derry, NH), whose shot was blocked out of play by a UMB defender.
Willer made three stops on the night for the Engineers. Laura Purcell (West Haven, CT), who played the first half in net for the Beacons, was credited with two saves while Katie Cosica (Pittsfield, MA), who played 65 minutes, totaling the second stanza and the two overtimes, registered four saves.
For the game, WPI enjoyed a slight 10-8 advantage in shots and took four of the game's six corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday afternoon with 1pm conference matches. WPI plays host to NEWMAC rival Coast Guard while UMass Boston travels to Little East foe UMass Dartmouth.
