PURCELL LIFTS WOMEN'S SOCCER IN 0-0 TIE VS. FITCHBURG STATE
Sept. 21, 2010
BOSTON, MA - Freshman goalkeeper Laura Purcell (West Haven, CT) made five saves to help the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team hang on for a 0-0 tie against Fitchburg State University this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The shutout was the first of Purcell's collegiate career and the first on the season for the Beacons. With the draw, UMass Boston stands at 4-1-2 overall while the Falcons are now 3-2-1 on the year.
Both teams had good scoring chances, but neither was able to capitalize on the strikes. At 20:56 into the match, Fitchburg senior midfield Mary Lindberg (Auburn, MA) ripped a shot from 25 yards out that had Purcell beat but the ball deflected off the crossbar. The Beacons also hit a crossbar midway through the second half when freshman forward Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, MA) lofted a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box over the head of freshman goalkeeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, MA) only to ricochet back into play.
The Falcons outshot the Beacons, 5-3 in the overtime sessions but the home squad had a 20-15 edge throughout the match.
Kirouac made nine saves in net for Fitchburg State before having to leave the contest with a finger injury. Junior keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, CT) played the final 20 minutes of regulation and both overtime sessions, making three saves in net for the Falcons.
The Beacons will be back in action on Thursday, September 23 when they travel to Worcester, MA to face WPI in a 7:00 p.m. tilt while the Falcons head to Bridgewater State for an 11:00 a.m. contest on Saturday, September 25.
