BOSTON, MA - Sophomore midfielder Allyson Lemieux (Hudson, NH) and sophomore forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) each netted a pair of goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team over visiting Wheelock College, 9-0, today at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 2-2-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-3-0.
UMass Boston netted five goals in the first half to match the school-standard last achieved on October 7, 2008 at Newbury College and is the fourth time it has found the back of the net that many times in a match. The nine goals is a school-record, eclipsing the former mark of seven, which was also last set at Newbury last season and reached three previous times.
Lemieux's two goals were the final tallies of the day and the first two of her collegiate career. Senior midfielder Erika Marsters (Mashpee, MA) combined with freshman midfielder Brittney Spencer (West Brookfield, MA) for the first score with less than 19 minutes left in the match and her second was set up by Spencer just 85 seconds later. Mulry's first marker of the day came at the 21:24 mark to give the Beacons' a 3-0 margin and her second tally came on a helper from sophomore Taylor Massmann (Kingston, MA) to give UMB a 6-0 advantage with the first goal of the second half. Mulry also had a hand in the Beacons' fourth goal when she found junior Nicki Finamore (Weymouth, MA) for her first score of the season at 23:22 of the first half.
UMass Boston got on the board first when sophomore midfielder Jocelyne LaBossiere (Mattapoisett, MA) found the back of the net at the 10:29 mark of the first half with her first goal of the season and assisted on the team's second goal when junior midfielder Kimberly Campbell (East Bridgewater, MA) netted her first tally of the year less than five minutes later. Freshman defender Anna O'Donoghue (Swansea, MA) later notched her first collegiate goal to give the Beacons three goals in a span of 3:20 and a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.
Marsters netted UMass Boston's seventh goal of the day when junior forward Tina Gillen (Carver, MA) hooked up with her at 65:36 of the second half.
Senior goalie Jessica Penta (Revere, MA) and junior keeper Michelle Cain (Essex, MA) combined on the shutout for the Beacons with Cain stopping the only shot on net by Wheelock. Sophomore keeper Alexandra Chiesa (Medford, MA) made 30 saves for the Wildcats as UMass Boston owned a 61-1 shot advantage.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, September 19 when they travel to Gorham, ME to take on University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference match at 1:00 p.m., while Wheelock heads to Quincy, MA to take on Eastern Nazarene College on September 17 at 3:30 p.m.
