QUINCY, MA - The Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team earned their first win of the season today to improve to 1-3-0 by defeating University of Massachusetts Boston, 2-0, at Bradley Field today on the campus of the ENC. The Beacons fall to 1-1-0 on the season.
UMass Boston started sharply, firing the first of eight shots of the match, but Eastern Nazarene goal keeper Brittany Hislop (Burley, WA) kept the Beacons out of the net. In the 25th minute, Brenna Mereness (Castleton, NY) brought the ball down to the left side of the field before sending a cross to the far post where Kara Webber (Marshfield, MA) headed it past the UMass Boston goalie into the net, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Late in the half, Mereness struck again, this time advancing the ball through the midfield before shooting from distance to beat the keeper over top and give Eastern Nazarene a 2-0 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, Lions' keeper Hislop was equal to all the Beacons' chances on goal. While being out shot 21-7, Hislop's eight saves enabled her to keep a clean sheet and protect the Eastern Nazarene lead, and first victory of the season.
Junior forward Tina Gillen (Carver, MA) led the visitors with eight shots of her own while junior midfielder Kim Campbell (East Bridgewater, MA) and senior midfielder Kristi Morales (San Francisco, CA) contributed four shots apiece.
