MULRY LEADS WOMEN'S SOCCER IN SEASON OPENER OVER RIVIER, 2-1

NASHUA, NH - Sophomore forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, MA) netted a goal and assisted on the game-winner to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team over host Rivier College, 2-1, today in the season opener and first matched played on the Raiders new turf field. The Beacons improve to 1-0 on the season, while Rivier falls to 0-1.

UMass Boston opened up the scoring in the first half on a thru ball at the 23:47 mark from junior forward Tina Gillen (Carver, MA) to Mulry who was able to find the back of the net on the short side of the keeper.

The Beacons would only pick up their game from there. Carrying the play, UMass Boston would put the Raiders on their heels and continue to dominate the possession. The second goal would come at 28:53 of the first half when Mulry maneuvered through the Rivier defense in the 18-yard box and played a ball across the goal box that found sophomore defender Taylor Massmann (Kingston, MA), who was able to tuck the ball away into the corner.

The score would remain 2-0 into halftime. The second half would be another story. Down 2-0, the Raiders turned their play up a notch and began to win 50/50 balls and carry the play. Creating more scoring opportunities , slowly the play began to switch ends and UMass Boston found itself backing into its end and on its heels. Finally in the 18th minute of the second stanza, Meg Hickey (Derry, NH) would take a shot from 25 yards out and put it away just under the cross bar for Rivier. The score was now 2-1 and the Raiders had the momentum. In the final 25 minutes , the Beacons would hang on and despite the fact that Rivier would out-shoot them and have several opportunities to tie. When the final whistle blew, UMass Boston had held on to win its first game of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Michelle Cain (Essex, MA) earned her first collegiate victory in net for UMB with seven saves.

The Raiders play again next Sunday, September 13th at UMaine Farmington, while the Beacons will travel to Quincy, MA to take on Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8.
