SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a goal in the waning seconds to help the Beacons earn their second dramatic victory in a row, as UMass Boston defeated Western New England University 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Suprenant Field.
With 10 seconds to play, Ledin scored the game-winner off of a through-pass from Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.). The sophomore forward beat a defender and then slipped the ball under the defender for her seventh goal of the season and third game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass.) earned her third win in three starts, as she made one save on two shots on goal. The reigning Little East Conference Goalie Of the Week made a key save in the 73rd minute when she stopped a header to keep the Beacons deficit at 1-0.
Four Beacons attempted four or more shots and six different UMB players recorded a shot on target.
After a scoreless first half in which the Beacons had the momentum, Western New England took the lead midway through the second half. Rachel Suntag scored her third goal off the season off of a corner kick to temporarily put the Golden Bears up 1-0.
But UMass Boston turned the game around over the final 25 minutes, grabbing a 6-2 shot advantage and a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard.
UMass Boston will return home to take on Bridgewater State University Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
