Oct. 29, 2011
BUFFALO, New York – With four straight goals, three in the third period alone, women’s ice hockey (1-1) recorded their first win of the 2011-12 season as they defeated Buffalo State College (1-1) by the final score of 4-2 Saturday evening at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.
For the Beacons, they each saw four different players found the back of the net in Saturday’s rematch. After back-to-back goals by the Bengals in the first period, UMass got on the scoreboard with a Brittany Usmail (New Hartford, N.Y.) power-play goal late in the second.
In the third Sarahanne Cavalo (Roxbury, N.H.) tied the game at 2-2 at 6:39 on the Beacons second power-play goal of the night. That goal would then spark two more scores by UMass, the first of which came from Emily Howard (Terryville, Conn.). The final goal of the night came with just 54 seconds left in the contest as Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) scored an unassisted power-play empty net goal to give the Beacons the 4-2 win.
Picking-up her first win of the year was Jami Cudmore (Balgonie, Saskatchewan), who totaled 24 saves between the pipes. For Buffalo State Jess Garland was handed the loss after coming up with 19 saves in the contest.
On the night, UMass was 3-for-9 on the power-play, while Buffalo State was held scoreless on all eight of their man-up opportunities.
Women’s ice hockey will make their home debut on Friday when they host ECAC East opponent Manhattanville College at 4 p.m. in the Clark Athletic Center Ice Arena.
