TERRYVILLE, Conn. - A Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) goal with less than three minutes to play in the second period would prove to be the deciding tally as women's ice hockey earned a 1-1 overtime tie with the Valiants of Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon at Terry Conners Rink.
With the draw the Beacons earn another crucial point as they continue their climb up the conference standings. Coupled with yesterday's 5-2 win over Nichols College, the Beacons are now sitting in sixth with only two weeks remaining in the regular season. They also carry a record of 9-8-4, 5-6-1 in the ECAC East, while the Valiants now have a record of 7-10-4, 5-4-3 in the conference.
For Fallon, Saturday's goal caps off a four point, four goal weekend for the Pembroke native. Assisting on the game-tying goal was defensemen Kelly Sharlow (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Alexa Cappione (Massena, N.Y.). Junior netminder Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.) earned her fourth tie of the year after registering 26 saves.
The lone goal from Manhattanville came in the first five minutes of the second period from Emma Rucinski, her first goal of the year.
Saturday's contest was an extremely close affair with neither team really dominating the ice. Manhattanville did end the contest with a 27-20 advantage in shots, but it was UMass Boston who registered the only two shots of the overtime period one of which banged off of the pipe.
Both teams finished scoreless on the power-play with UMass Boston going 0-for-5, while Manhattanville went 0-for-4. Kirsten Shaughnessy notched her third tie of the year after stopping 19 Beacons shots, and now stands at 4-7-3 on the season.
Women's Hockey returns to action on Friday when they host Salve Regina University at 4 p.m.
