WORCESTER, Mass. – A power-play goal from Izzy Bagi would be the only score needed as Holy Cross (5-1-0, 3-1-0 ECAC East) defeated women's ice hockey (1-4-1, 1-3-0 ECAC East) by the final of 1-0 Friday evening at Hart Recreation Center in an ECAC East contest.
Bagi's goal came at the 2:15 mark in the second period off of assists from Taylor McGee and Rose Rather. On the night, the Crusaders registered 21 shots on goal, with sophomore Casey Schaejbe (Arlington, Mass.) combining for 20 stops.
The Beacons offense fired off 14 shots in the tough conference loss. Holy Cross' Krista Manzanares earned her second win of the year and first shutout after making 14 saves.
On the power-play the Beacons went 0-for-5, while the Crusaders went 1-for-5 on the man-up chances.
Holy Cross led the first two periods in shots as they combined for 18, while the Beacons totaled just eight chances respectively. Trailing by one going into the final period, UMass Boston came alive in the third and outshot their Division II rivals 6-3. The Beacons looked to tie the game in the final 20 minutes of play, but were unable to get the puck past Manzanares.
Junior Tori Pizzuto (Waterbury, Conn.) led UMass with a combined four shots, while Jenny Currie (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with two chances on goal. In the face-off circle, Emily Russell was a perfect 5-for-5.
The Beacons return to action tomorrow when they face Salve Regina University at 7 p.m. in another ECAC East contest.
