Women's Hockey Blanks Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored the only goal of the game with six minutes to go in the second period Friday evening as women's hockey held on to defeat Plymouth State University, 1-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

The game was a battle of two goaltenders –junior Jamie Cudmore (Balgonie, Sask.) and PSU sophomore Ali Ponte. Cudmore made 26 saves to record her first shutout of the season, while Ponte finished with 32 saves in a tough-luck loss. The Beacons improve to 6-7-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play while the Panthers are now 1-10-3 and 1-6-2. PSU has played five consecutive one-goal games (1-4-0).

The Beacons registered a 15-7 advantage in shots in a scoreless first period. UMass Boston put a flurry of pressure on the PSU goal midway through the second period, and Ponte made a point-blank-range stop on sophomore Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) and another one moments later on classmate Sarahanne Cavolo (Roxbury, N.H.). UMB finally broke the scoreless game when Kiernan snapped a wrist shot from just inside face-off circle to Ponte's right into the upper left corner of the net over Ponte's shoulder. Junior Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up the only assist on the play.

PSU added a flurry of its own in the third period, out-shooting the visitors 10-4 in the final frame. Cudmore made a nice save on a near breakaway by sophomore Jamie O'Brien with 13 minutes remaining, and moments later a shot from the point by freshman Cortney Sollows got past Cudmore but hit the left goal post.

Ponte kept it a one-goal game for PSU with nine minutes on the clock when she stopped a breakaway by Loiselle. PSU had a two-skater power play in the final two minutes but could not capitalize.

Women's hockey moves on to the University of Southern Maine Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matinee.
