RUTLAND, Vt. – Even with a late barrage by the Spartans of Castleton State College (3-4-0, 3-2-0 ECAC East), senior goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, Conn.) managed to hold strong to help women's hockey (4-4-2, 3-3-1 ECAC East) to a huge 2-1 ECAC East conference win Friday evening at Spartan Arena.
On-top of the strong defensive effort by Hallett, Dylan Caron (Burrillville, R.I.) fueled the Beacons on the other side of the ice, scoring both goals for UMass Boston in the first nine minutes of the third period. Her opening score was the first of the night, and came on the power-play. Her eventual game-winner would find the back of the net less than three minutes later to boost the Beacons to their first .500 mark of the year.
For Hallett, her night consisted of 36 saves, which included many huge stops in the hectic third frame. On the night, the Spartans held a 37-31 advantage in shots over the Beacons. Both teams skated away with a power-play goal, as UMass Boston ended the night 1-for-4, and Castleton 1-for-6.
Both teams had their opportunities in the first period, including a near breakaway attempt for the Spartans and a couple 2-on-1 rushes for the Beacons. Both goaltenders stood their ground, as Hallett turned away seven shots and junior Katharyn Dembowski made 11 stops between the pipes for Castleton.
The Spartans came out much more aggressive in the second period, outshooting UMass Boston 15-10. They had a number of good chances, including shots by Stephanie Bardell and Meagan Hulbert in the first five minutes. Castleton's two best chances came on power plays, as the puck slid in front of the net both times, however Hallett was able to get a pad on it to make the stop.
In the third period, Caron's early power-play goal gave the Beacons the early momentum. Her first-goal of the night came after she picked up a loose puck on the right side of the net and chipped it over a sprawled out Dembowski.
Caron found the net 2:17 later off another rebound on the right side of the net to push the Beacons lead to 2-0 with an assist coming from Tori PIzzuto (Waterbury, Conn.).
Castleton cut the lead in half 15:40 into the final period, as Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.) scored just five seconds into Spartan power play. Werger scored right in front of the net with an assist from junior Christine Newton (Ogden, Utah).
The Spartans kept pressure, including an onslaught of shots in the final minute, but Hallett turned away each one to earn the victory, her second of the season.
Women's hockey returns to action tomorrow when they face New England College at 1 p.m.
