PAWTUCKET, R.I.—UMass Boston women's basketball freshman Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) racked up her second Little East Conference Rookie of the Week award in three weeks, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Grassi and fellow Beacon freshman Megan Dixon (Hanover, Mass.) are the only freshman to have won the award this season.
Grassi was phenomenal this past week, as she averaged a team-best 16.0 points per game during a 3-0 week. The freshman forward shot 63.6 percent from the field (14-22), knocked down 8-9 3-pointers and shot 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line. She also tacked on 4.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in just 22 minutes per game.
She opened the week by recording 12 and 14 points in a pair of non-conference wins over Becker College and Fitchburg State University.
Grassi saved her best for last, as she went off for a career-high 22 points in 22 minutes in the Beacons' LEC opener. She keyed UMass Boston's third-quarter comeback as she recorded 12 of her 22 points in a 26-1 third quarter. For the afternoon, Grassi shot 4-5 from the field, 4-4 from distance and 10-12 from the charity stripe against defending LEC Tournament Champions Keene State College.
The Beacons will resume play on Tuesday night, when they host Fitchurg State University at 5:30 p.m.
