Women's Basktball's Suffers Setback In 48-30 Loss At Rhode Island College
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island College's swarming defense proved too much for UMass Boston women's basketball Saturday afternoon, as the Anchorwomen held the Beacons to just 20 percent shooting in a 48-30 Anchorwomen victory at the Murray Center.
UMass Boston fell to 6-2 and 1-1 in the Little East after seeing their five-game winning streak come to an end. The Anchorwomen moved to 5-4 and 1-1 in Little East Conference play.
Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and Andrea Suffredini (Milford, Mass.) accounted for 23 of the Beacons' 30 points on the day. The pair knocked down nine of the Beacon's 12 made field goals on the day on just 20 attempts, while the rest of the team finished 3-for-40.
Murphy finished the contest with 12 points and 12 rebounds to register her sixth-straight double-double. Suffredini added 11 points and four rebounds to help UMass Boston keep the contest within striking distance for the first 27 minutes of the contest.
Vandell Andrade led the host Anchorwomen with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
UMass Boston trailed for the final 35 minutes after grabbing their only lead of the game at 15:11 of the first half, but a late run by Rhode Island College gave them a 26-14 lead into halftime. Suffredini cut the deficit to eight (26-18) with back-to-back layups to open the second half, but that would be as close as UMass Boston would get.
The Beacons will have two weeks off before returning to action December 30th at 4pm when they host Husson University.
