MEDFORD, Mass.—Behind nine 3-pointers and 22 points off turnovers, #10 Tufts University (8-0) stayed undefeated and downed UMass Boston (5-2) 68-42 Thursday evening at Cousens Gymnasium.
Freshman Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) recorded her third career double-double for the Beacons with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead UMass Boston in the loss.
Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds, while Teresa Pina (Boston, Mass.) finished with six points and nine boards.
Tufts jumped out to 13-0 lead over the first 3:37, as they knocked down five of their first eight shots including three 3-pointers.
Pina got the Beacons on the board with a layup at 16:05 of their first half but the Beacons would only score once more over the next four minutes.
After Tufts extended the lead to 20-4, Murphy and Morrison scored five of the next seven to cut the deficit to 13. That would be as close as the Beacons would get the rest of the way, as Tufts relentlessly attacked the Beacons zone-defense.
Trailing 29-10, UMass Boston went on a 7-4 run behind layups from Andrea Suffredini (Milford, Mass.) and Morrison and a 3-pointer from Meghan Agger (Sacco, Maine.) to make it 33-17.
Lauren Perra (Taunton, Mass.) scored all five of her points over the final six minutes and Agger added a jump shot to account for the 68-42 final score.
For the game, UMass Boston shot 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the field and 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc. On the other side, the Jumbos knocked down 34.7 percent (25-of-72) of their shots and 37.5 percent (9-of-24) of their three-point attempts.
Tufts owned the rebounding battle with a 52-39 advantage and a 25-14 edge on the offensive glass.
UMass Boston will return to Little East Conference play Saturday when they they travel to New Hampshire to take on Keene State College at 1:00 p.m.
