Women's Basketball Dispatches Wheelock for First Road Win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Led by freshman forward Kirsten Morrison's (North Reading, Mass.) game-high 15 points, women's basketball (2-3) notched their first road win of the season as they defeated Wheelock College (0-5) by the final score of 73-19 Thursday evening at Brunelli Court.
Not only was Morrison solid from the field with her 7-of-9 shooting, but the Beacons defense was dominant as well, holding the Wildcats to a mere 17.4% shooting on the night. They also did not allow a single 3-pointer, as Wheelock went 0-for-12.
Along with Morrison, Tasha Bernardez (Roxbury, Mass.) also fueled UMass Boston's offensive effort with her nine points. Freshman guard Lauren Perra (Taunton, Mass.) dished out a career-high nine assists, while Taylor Whyte (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) had her strongest performance of the season pulling down a team-high seven rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
In the first six minutes of Thursday's contest, eight of the Beacons 10 points would belong to Morrison, who on Monday was named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week. The early momentum gained from Morrison, would fuel UMass Boston for the remainder of the contest, as they took a 27-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
After the break, the Beacons continued to roll, holding Wheelock to just nine points, while they combined for 36 on 14-of-39 shooting, which included three 3-pointers, and 5-of-8 shooting at the line. On the glass, UMass Boston held a +8 advantage in rebounds (45-37).
Women's basketball returns to action on Saturday when they face Western Connecticut State University at 1 p.m. in the Little East Conference opener for both squads.
