WESTFIELD, Mass. – With three players finishing in double-figures the Owls of Westfield State University (5-6) defeated women's basketball (2-7) by the final score of 54-37 Tuesday evening Woodward Center in the Beacons final regular season game of 2011.
Leading Westfield to the win was Jen Ashton, who finished with a team-high 13 points. Gabby Felix and Angela Paterson were right behind her with 10 points each. Also pushing Westfield to the victory was their 38.9% shooting in the first half, which allowed them to take a 33-18 lead. In the second half, both teams struggled from the floor shooting 22.2% and 21.9% respectively.
Freshman Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) was once again the driving force for the Beacons with her fourth straight double-double. This time the 6'2" center recorded 13 boards, while also dropping in 17 points. She also blocked a combined four shots in a career-high 39 minutes of action.
Lauren Perra (Taunton, Mass.) played all 40 minutes for UMass Boston and finished the night with nine points and had three assists.
Turnovers played a major part in the Beacons inability to build any offensive momentum. On the night UMass Boston combined for 26 turnovers, which Westfield was able to convert into 15 points. The Owls were also consistent in the paint as they held a +18 advantage over the Beacons (28-10).
UMass Boston got Thursday's game off to a great start, as they jumped to an early 7-0 lead. However that momentum did not last, as Westfield State quickly took control of Thursday's match-up. They would use their strong first half performance and 15 point lead to carry them through the final 20 minutes of play to earn the victory.
Women's basketball returns to action on January 3 when they travel to New Jersey to face Rutgers-Newark at 1 p.m.
