Track and Field Begins Outdoor Season at Tufts Snowflake Classic
MEDFORD, Mass. – The outdoor track and field season got off to a great start for the Beacons as both teams recorded a seventh place finish at the 2014 Tufts University Snowflake Classic.
Helping their teams to their top-10 finishes were Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.), Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.), and Taylor Smith (Burlington, Mass.) as all three earned their first top marks of the new campaign. McGuffie sprinted her way to a top time in the 200 meter dash, while Smith recorded a throw of 115-08 feet in the discus throw.
For Joseph he led the way in the high jump with a leap of 6-09.00 feet, while right behind him was Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) who finished in second place with a jump of 6-08.00 feet. Senior Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) also had a strong day for the Beacons as she posted a second place finish in the high jump as well with a leap of 5-03.00 feet. Her jump was a mere two inches away from tying the all-time outdoor program record.
Also in action for the Beacons in the men's 100 meter dash was Fritz Gustave (Fall River, Mass.) as he finished the prelims with a time of 11.44 to earn 16th place overall. Nobert Simon (Chelsea, Mass.) earned the top time in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.48 to earn 12th place. Simon also earned the fastetst time for UMass Boston in the 400 meter dash as he crossed the finish line with a time of 53.91 seconds.
In the 800 meter run Patrick Powell (Dorchester, Mass.) and Jonathan Long recorded times of 2:18.13 and 2:19.99 to earn 45th and 48th place respectively. Tad Delaney (Halifax, Mass.) was the lone runner in the 1,500 meter run and earned a time of 4:39.37. Xavier Romero (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Beacons in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.20 (13th place). He would also lead the way in the long jump event with a leap of 18-10.50 feet to earn 22nd place.
Kervens Jean-Phillippe (Milton, Mass.) had a busy afternoon competing in three throwing events. He would first finish in 26th place in the discus throw with a mark of 89-11. In the javelin he earned 41st (99-08), while in the shot put he took 17th place (37-07.25).
Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded the second fastest time of any Beacon sprinter in the 100 meter dash as the junior narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals. She posted a time of 12.93 seconds to earn 9th place overall. O'Brien went on to finish in 12th place (13.07) in the event, followed by Anisha Trappier (Taunton, Mass.) who earned 17th (13.19).
Trappier posted her second top-20 finish of the day in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.48 seconds to earn 13th place overall.
Aria Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) and Danny Valeri (Leominster, Mass.) led the way for the Beacons in the 400 meter dash. Leao sprinted her way to a 13th place finish and a time of 1:03.40. Valeri crossed the finish line in 33rd place with a time 1:11.94.
Angelica Pizzi (Milton, Mass.) represented the Beacons in the 1,500 meter run and finished the event with a time of 4:57.81 to earn 15th place.
Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.), Nicole Aube (Westfield, Mass.), and Brittany Moore (Billerica, Mass.) joined Smith in the throwing events to help boost the Beacons point total. Moore grabbed 11th in the discus throw with her toss of 83-08, while Aube and Kloczewiak recorded throws of 116-10 and 102-09 respectively in the hammer throw. Smith went on to finish in ninth place in the shot put with a final mark of 34-11.75 feet.
Track and Field returns to action on Friday when they compete at the Ramapo College (N.J.) Roadrunner Invitational in Mahwah, New Jersey.
