Relay Teams Shine At Day 1 of ECAC Division III Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – On the first day of the 2014 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship the men's and women's 4x200 meter relay teams took center stage for UMass Boston as the women's team recorded a fifth place finish, while the men's team set a new program record Friday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center.

For the women's team, Anisha Trappier (Taunton, Mass.), Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.), Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.), and Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.) recorded a combined time of 1:44.06 seconds beating out Bates College by .44 seconds.

The men's record setting performance was due to the combined effort of Nobert Simon (Chelsea, Mass.), Fritz Gustave (Fall River, Mass.), Kelly Desane (Cambridge, Mass.), and Shawn Lawson (Westford, Mass.) as the four sprinters recorded a time of 1:31.49.  They broke the original record, which was set last month by almost two seconds.

In the women's 60 meter dash prelims, McGuffie recorded a time of 7.97 seconds just missing the qualifying mark for the finals.  The time marked the third fastest time recorded by the sophomore All-American.

Also in the 60 meter dash was Trappier as she finished with a time of 8.10 seconds (37th place) and O'Brien with her time of 8.11 seconds (40th place).

The Beacons return to action tomorrow when they compete on the final day of the championship meet as every athlete is looking to earn a spot in this year's National Championship.
