BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The track and field team got their 2012 outdoor season off to a great start as the Beacons set four program records as well as post 14 top-3 finishes Saturday afternoon at the Bridgewater State University Bears Track and Field Invitational.
Starting off the record day was Henry Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) who set a new program mark in the 110 meter hurdles with his time of 15.46 seconds, which earned him third place in the event. The next record set at Saturday's meet was by Jacqueline Conway as she recorded the program's first pole vault mark with a height of 2.25 feet.
From there Carl Joseph (Brockton, Mass.) and Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) went leap for leap in the high jump as the two Beacons finished in first and second place respectively. Joseph and Hart set the program record with a height of 6-05.00 feet. The final record to be set on Saturday was by Kebba Nasso (Attleboro, Mass.) in the triple jump. The freshman took first in the event with a jump of 44-10.25 feet.
On the women's side the Beacons notched a fourth place time in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 52.98 seconds. Newcomer Mari Littleton finished in 10th place in the 1,500 meter run (5:26.17) and in the 400 meter dash (1:10.30).
In the 100 meter dash it was the trio of Samara Faustin (Boston, Mass.), Fatima Konteh (Lewis Center, Ohio), and Conway who each represented UMass. Faustin led the group with a second place finish and a time of 12.45 seconds. Konteh was next with her time of 14.42 seconds, followed by Conway's time of 15.02 seconds. Along with Littleton, Ari Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) also competed in the 400 meter dash and finished the event third place with a time of 1:02.55.
Leao and Faustin would then finish in the top-4 of the 200 meter dash with times of 27.14 and 26.04 seconds respectively. Alessandra Fiallos (Derby, Conn.) finished in 16th place in 200 with a time of 30.20 seconds, with Konteh right behind her with a time of 30.46 seconds. After that the Beacons 4x400 meter relay team posted a third place time of 4:40.00.
In the discus throw newcomer Brittany Moore finished in fifth place with a toss of 91-06 feet. Kaitlin Merrikin (East Bridgewater, Mass.) was next for the Beacons as she finished in 13th place with a distance of 68-08 feet. Chrissy Soares-Fernandes (Brockton, Mass.) finished in 15th (66-06 ft.), followed by Nicole Aube (Westfield, Mass.) in 18th (51-11 ft.) and Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) in 19th (41-02 ft.).
Kloczewiak would then earn the top throw in the hammer as the junior record a final distance of 97-10 feet to finish in seventh place. Soares-Fernandes earned the top mark in the shot put as she finished in 13th place with a toss of 26-01.50 feet.
The men's team also had an impressive day as they started the meet off with a third place finish in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 43.95 seconds. In the 1,500 meter run Xhulio Uruci (Newton, Mass.) finished in third place with a time of 4:13.25. Finishing just three spots behind his teammate was Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) who posted a time of 4:17.71.
In the 100 meter dash, UMass was represented by a total of six sprinters, with Norbert Simon (Chelsea, Mass.) leading the team with a time of 11.79 seconds (13th). Brandon Couloute (Shelton, Mass.) was next to cross the finish line as he recorded a time of 12.10 seconds (22nd). Joseph finished in 25th place, followed by Ervin Lofton (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in 30th, Lenford Coote (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in 32nd, and Willie Francois (Roslindale, Mass.) in 37th.
Nasso went on to take first in both the 400 meter dash with his time of 49.81 seconds. Couloute finished in sixth place in the 400 with his time of 52.54 seconds. Morales took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles to lead the Beacons in the event as he recorded a time of 59.14 seconds.
Uruci, Kerin and Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, Mass.) finished in fourth, fifth, and sixth place respectively in the 800 meter run with times of 2:04.45, 2:07.668, and 2:08.00. Nasso then returned to the track to finish in fourth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.79 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team notched a fourth place finish with their combined time of 3:38.66. Kirby Cole (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went on to finish in second place in the pole vault with a height of 10-06.00 feet.
Also competing in the field events was Coote who took 18th place in the shot put with his throw of 30-05.75 feet. Morales closed out the invitational with a second place finish in the long jump as he recorded a final distance of 20-04.50 feet.
Track and Field returns to action next Saturday when they compete in the Tufts University Snowflake Invitational. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
