MEDFORD, MA - Sophomore Henry Morales (Chelsea, MA) registered a second place finish in the 200M race and sophomore Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, MA) placed third overall in the long jump event to pace the University of Massachusetts Boston men's and women's outdoor track and field squads Saturday afternoon at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. The men's squad finished 10th overall with 25 points while the women's team placed 15th with two points. Both the Tufts men's and women's teams came away victorious in their own meet as the men took home the crown with 167 points while the women topped the field with 147.5 points.
Morales clocked in a time of 23.55 seconds in the 200M for the second place finish and also competed in several other events for the Beacons. The sophomore placed eighth in the 100M dash prelims with a time of 11.14 seconds and then in the 100M finals, finished fifth overall with an 11.74 second race time. Morales was also a member of the UMass Boston 4X100M relay team featuring sophomore Jake Kerin (Quincy, MA), freshman Yves Casseus (Chelsea, MA) and senior Fuad Conteh (Freedom, Seirra Leone) that finished third with a time of 45.40 seconds. Morales's final event of the day was the javelin in which he placed 12th with a toss of 37.82m. Conteh also competed in the 100M prelim, finishing 20th with an 11.94 second time while freshman Lenford Coote (Brooklyn, NY) also ran in the prelim, finishing 28th after clocking in at 12.74 seconds. Coote also competed in the Discus event, finishing 22nd with a throw of 20.60m as well as the Shot Put, finishing 17th with a toss of 9.35m.
Abdul's third place leap in the long jump measured 6.04 meters and the sophomore also competed in the high jump, placing ninth with a jump of 1.76 meters. Abdul also competed in the 400M race, finishing 19th with a time of 53.81 seconds. Sophomores Chris Chapman (Brockton, MA), Jeff Laurore (Malden, MA) and junior William Francois also competed in the 400M event for UMass Boston as Chapman finished 24th with a time of 58.88 second just in front of Laurore who came in 25th at 1:00.47 while Francois rounded out the field in 26th place and a 1:03.41 time.
Kerin, senior Benajah Potter (Arlington, MA), Chapman and Laurore ran the 200M event as Kerin clocked in at 25.96 seconds for a 26th place showing. Potter was next, placing 28th with a time of 26.92 seconds followed by Chapman in 29th place at 27.35 seconds and Laurore in 30th, crossing the finish line in 27.42 seconds. Both Kerin and Potter also raced in the 800M event as Kerin had a solid race, finishing eighth overall with a time of 2:02.87 while Potter finished 14th in 2:07.71.
Rounding out the men's field, junior Kirby Cole (Shrewsbury, MA) and Kerin both competed in the javelin throw with Morales as Cole placed 13th with a toss of 27.76m while Kerin finished 14th after a throw of 27.68m.
In the women's field, the 4X100M relay team comprised of sophomores Samara Faustin (Lynn, MA), Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan), Audra Hite (Dorchester, MA) and freshman Ariana Leao (New Bedford, MA) finished seventh overall with a time of 55.11 seconds.
Faustin also raced in the 100M and 200M races, finishing 10th in the 100M with a time of 13.54 seconds and 14th in the 200M, clocking in at 29.13 seconds. Leao was not far behind in the 200M, finishing 15th with a time of 29.28 and Hite followed her across the finish line in 16th place and a time of 29.48. Ogawa also competed in the 200M with a time of 31.50 seconds, good for 27th place.
Leao and Ogawa also ran in the 400M event, was Leao placed 22nd overall with a time of 1:06.01 and Ogawa finished 26th, clocking in at 1:09.34. Justina Bogfigilio rounded out the women's field, competing in the 100M race and coming in 23rd with a time of 16.14.
The Beacons will be back in action this Saturday, April 9 when they head to North Dartmouth, MA to race in the Corsair Classic on the campus of UMass Dartmouth starting at 10:00 a.m.
