PAWTUCKET, R.I.—Junior Sanshrut Sharma (Mumbai, India) and sophomore Ray Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) took home the first Men's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week awards of the season, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The duo both played crucial parts is helping UMass Boston earn their first win of the season, a 6-3 victory over Curry College.
Sharma leads the entire conference in singles victories, after picking up a pair of wins during the Beacons' Spring Break trip.
He won his first match of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number five singles against the University of Northwestern (Minn.). He followed that up with a key 6-1, 6-2 win at number five singles in the Beacons' 6-3 win over Curry.
In his final two matches of the week, Sharma moved up to fourth singles, and nearly scored a victory against his opponent from Texas Lutheran University.
Platteel earned his first two collegiate wins against the Colonels, to help UMass Boston down their Massachusetts rivals. He teamed up with Guang Huang (Quincy, Mass.) for an 8-6 win at third doubles. In singles play, Platteel outlasted Zach Muller for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win at sixth singles.
Platteel played in every match in Florida and took his opponent to three sets on two occasions.
UMass Boston will make their New England debut on Saturday, when they host Emerson College at 1 p.m. in their home opener.
