BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston men's tennis swept the Little East Conference weekly awards for the second consecutive week, as the league office announced Monday afternoon that Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) were named the Little East Conference Player and Rookie of the Week.
The Beacons' two seniors helped UMass Boston go to 2-0 on the week, including earning a 6-3 victory over Western Connecticut State University in the Beacons' Little East Conference opener.
Lai went a perfect 4-0 on the week, including dropping just one game over four sets at number two singles. He turned in a dominant performance in his Little East match at Western Connecticut, winning his singles match 6-0, 6-0 to power the Beacons to their first-ever win in Danbury. He also teamed up with Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.) to defeat the Colonials' number one doubles pair 8-2.
Grinhaus registered a pair of wins at number five singles and number two doubles to post a 4-0 mark this past week for UMass Boston. The Scarsdale, N.Y. resident opened Little East Conference play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against his Western Connecticut opponent. He and doubles partner Eglis Bizhoti (Kucovë, Albania) made quick work of their Colonials opponents with an 8-3 victory.
Monday's award marked the second-consecutive Rookie of the Week award for Grinhaus and the first time Lai has been named the Little East Conference Player of the Week.
The defending Little East Conference champions have a busy week ahead, as the Beacons will play two conference matches and three matches overall. UMass Boston kicks off the busy stretch Wednesday when they host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m.
