KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Wisconsin La-Crosse (10-4) proved too much for a banged up UMass Boston men's tennis squad (0-5), as the Eagles handed the Beacons a 9-0 defeat Tuesday afternoon at the Oak Street Community Park.
With the loss, UMass Boston wraps up their spring trip at 0-3 and fall to 0-5 overall. The Beacons will enjoy two more days in Florida before returning to New England and gearing up for their first home match of the season against Eastern Nazarene College on Thursday March 27 at 3:00 p.m.
The Eagles started the match with a sweep of singles action, as the two sides elected to start the rain-delayed match with singles rather than doubles.
Matt Bulger opened the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number six singles over Brian Sou (Revere, Mass.), before Nick Skanavis made it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth-flight singles over Mark Grinhaus (Scarsdale, N.Y.).
Peter Stadum picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Eglis Bizhoti (Kucove, Albania) at number two singles and the Eagles wrapped up singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) at top-flight singles.
Doubles play opened with the Eagles picking up another point right away, as the Beacons' third pair of Wang and Grinhaus both had to abstain from playing due to injuries.
Alex Brost and Thomas Joswiak pushed the lead to 8-0, when they claimed an 8-1 win over Bizhoti and Lai at number one doubles. The Eagles tacked on their ninth and final point when Simon Brandt and Austin Stefanich defeated Analetto and Jon Feng (Waukesha, Wis.) at second-flight doubles.
